Hot-swap keyboards: what it means and when it matters

Hot-swap sockets let you change switches without soldering. What that actually enables, what can go wrong with the sockets, and the one situation where it is worth paying extra for.

A hot-swap keyboard has sockets on the circuit board instead of soldered joints. Switches push in and pull out with a cheap tool, in seconds, without heat.

That is the whole feature. What follows is what it is actually good for, because the marketing and the practical value diverge somewhat.

What it replaces

On a soldered board, every switch is permanently attached to the PCB by two blobs of solder. Changing them means desoldering 61 to 104 joints individually with an iron and a desoldering pump, then soldering the new ones in. It takes several hours, requires equipment costing more than a budget keyboard, and carries a real risk of lifting a pad and killing the board.

In practice this means: on a soldered board, the switches you get are the switches you have. The Drift 64 tested here is soldered, and when two of its switches started sounding different from the rest there was nothing to be done about it.

What it is actually good for

Making the decision reversible. This is the main one, and it applies most to people buying their first mechanical keyboard. You do not know yet whether you prefer linear or tactile, or what weight suits you — almost nobody does before they have typed on several. Hot-swap turns a wrong guess into a $25 switch set instead of a wrong keyboard.

Repair. A single failing switch is a two-minute fix rather than a soldering job. Over the life of a board this is worth more than it sounds.

Fixing bad factory switches. Budget boards frequently ship with the cheapest acceptable switch, because switches are a visible line item. On a hot-swap board that is the easiest upgrade available, and it usually improves the board more than anything else you could spend $25 on.

What it is not good for

It does not make a bad board good. Switches are one component. A hollow case, a rattling stabiliser and a stiff tray mount are all unaffected by what you put in the sockets. The Sable 104 is hot-swap throughout and the switches are not its problem.

It does not, by itself, make a board better than a soldered one. Soldered joints are more reliable and slightly better electrically. A well-made soldered board is not worse than a hot-swap one; it is just fixed.

3-pin and 5-pin

Switches have two metal pins that carry the signal. Five-pin switches — sometimes called PCB-mount — have two additional plastic legs either side of the centre post, purely for alignment.

A 5-pin socket accepts both. A 3-pin socket only takes 3-pin switches, though you can clip the plastic legs off a 5-pin switch with flush cutters to make it fit, which is common and harmless.

Most current hot-swap boards are 5-pin. If a listing does not say, assume 5-pin and check before buying switches.

What goes wrong

Bent pins. The most common mistake by a distance. If a switch pin is bent even slightly, it will not seat, and forcing it can damage the socket. Look at both pins before every insertion — they should be straight and parallel. Straighten with tweezers if not.

Loose sockets. Each socket is a spring contact rated for a limited number of insertions, typically quoted around 100. Ordinary use never gets close. Repeated experimentation can, and the symptom is a socket that no longer grips — a key that needs a firmer press to seat, or one that intermittently stops registering.

The Ferrule 75 on this site developed exactly this on its F5 position at around five months, after several switch changes. It still works, and it is the sort of thing that sometimes becomes a fault later.

Partial seating. A switch that looks in but is not fully down will work intermittently. Press firmly until it clicks flush against the plate, and check the key registers before putting the keycap back.

The practical advice

Buy hot-swap if you are new to mechanical keyboards. Not because you will definitely change the switches, but because you cannot yet know whether you will want to, and the option is cheap.

If you have used mechanical keyboards for years and know precisely what you like, hot-swap is a convenience rather than a requirement — and a well-built soldered board at the same price often puts the saved money somewhere more useful.
